Not even a year has gone by since I started this blog. What started with a general fascination with very large people - and how they let themselves get that way while ignoring many warning signs for poor health and obstacles to easier living - has grown into a strong interest in learning about health and nutrition. I’ve discovered that writing about this topic has managed to pique my interest in all things health and fitness related so much that I’m considering a career change.
In order to really put my enthusiasm for health to the test, I’m going back to school!
Yup, I’ve already started taking classes, and I’m finding them extremely interesting.
They are:
1. Human Nutrition
- Identifying the many nutrients and learning how they are absorbed, digested, stored, excreted, as well as how they interact.
-All of the major body systems (cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, immune, etc..) will be explored along with how the body uses nutrients to make these systems run.
-Recent research is presented alongside a background of basic nutritional concepts.
-Methods of how nutrition can be emphasized to promote health and well being will be discussed with a special interest in the role it plays in the current health delivery system.
2. Personal Health
- Discussing the principles, problems, and possible solutions for healthy living in today’s environment.
- Topics include addiction, stress, weight issues, fitness, disease, (among others) and the body’s psychological and physiological actions and reactions.
Basically I’m only doing this to shut those people up that think I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Whether I end up becoming a Registered Dietitian, or a Certified Nutrition Specialist, or a Health Consultant (I made that one up), or something else entirely, really it will just be adding a hard earned suffix to the name that is me, which already spells genious.
When I come accross anything interesting that I feel I need to share… I’ll tag it “Lernt in Skool”.
I promise you this: I will never become a puppet for the drug industry, and likely not for any food pyramid put out by the government either.

Have fun, and good luck!
What will you do if something you are taught in class goes against what you believe to be true?
Good question, Brit.
I should say that as much as I seem to run off at the mouth about certain things, I hate being wrong. Therefore, I always make sure and choose my words carefully, and research what I write about beforehand to make sure I’ve got it right the first time.
That being said, I’m certainly willing to admit when I’m wrong. I know you’ve seen that I address every person that disagrees with me here.
I think I’ve come to a point where there are few ideas I have about health that remain beliefs, and instead are based on actual knowledge about certain nutrients and their effects on the body. What I’m saying is, I’ve learned the basics on my own, now I’m going to find out if learning all of the intricate nitty gritty details is just as interesting to me.
I think part of making sure I stick to my statement about not being a puppet for corporations or government, is by keeping this blog. Accountability makes a big difference when alternatively I could just simply follow a path of not questioning myself or others.
Hey Bloggy! Actually me beginning my weight loss/health gain journey was a huge inspiration for me to change my career direction as well. Have fun learning more and definitely keep us all posted on what you learn.
AH! How’d you manage to get a billboard in Times Square?
Those classes sound pretty interesting, I’m jealous. I miss school. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if I had studied something different in college. My interests are so different now than they were back then. It just seems so daunting to go back. I’m not young anymore.
I respect you for following your interests! And you’re humble enough to say that there is a lot you can learn (even though you joke about being a genious.. heh).
Way to go Bloggy
I would love to be a fly on the wall of your classroom.
I can just imagine the arguments (academic debates) between you and the typical dietitian-to-be.
What are they gonna do when Bloggy runs wild on their food pyramid???
Those classes do sound interesting. Can’t wait till you share with us what you’ve “lernt at skool”. Nothing better than gaining knowledge without having to do all the work :p
Good luck and keep up the good work (I see it has already paid off with a billboard on time square!!!!)
Yay, Bloggy!
Good luck and study hard so you can share your knowledge with those of us too lazy/poor to go to skool!
Great move, knowledge is power!
I hope you will have time to continue blogging. More people need to face up to the elephant in the room.
When I visit the US I’m always stunned by the general obesity everywhere and how it seems to be accepted. It amazes me how so many people choose to let them selves get so fat. And it must be a conscious decision, mustn’t it? How many times do you go through the experience of not fitting into your clothes, and having to increase your clothing size to realize that you’re getting way overweight? They must know what’s going on but … I don’t know. It seems socially acceptable to let yourself get huge.
So much so that, in Europe anyway, every fat person you see can be assumed to be American and usually is. It’s become a national identity! Fascinating. And unfair on the rest of you. There might be more regular sized Americans here too but they blend in better
I was thinking of going into nutrition, possibly becoming an RD, but it’s a lot of school, and I wasn’t in the mood. It’s also very competitive, as many people want to be in this field, so I’ll just stick with chemistry, learn nutrition for fun.
Hey Flood, there are many reasons that people are fat, and very few are happy about it, or would choose it if they could figure out another way. It’s NOT as simple as that, no matter now snarky this blog is. When McBloggenstein learns more in this field, he may learn some compassion, at least if he ever wants any clients.
