I love how fat people always compare themselves to diabled people. Like they can't help it or something. And for the guy that wined about people making fun of fat kids... I don't think that is what anyone is saying. They are just saying that fat people should stop blaming everyone else for their problems and fix it. You should have to pay for two seats on an airplane if you can't fit in one. Why should the person next to you have to pay full price when you are taking half of what they paid for.

Yeah, these guys are being a bit over the top but the truth is that over weight Americans are costing all of us a sh!t load of money. So much so that the cost of health care is # 2 behind the economy in political importance.
So here's Sally pushing bon bons down her gullet every day at lunch and pushing her already obease self to new highs (weight) - and then there is me eating low glycemic balance diets and exercising daily. Sally has asthma and diabetes. Me.. well nothing wrong with me. Oh, and did I mention that I am 50 and Sally is 35.
Ted is spot on that people have the right to make choices but when it effects me negatively in the pocket book then that is where their rights end.

I've definitely heard that, Brit.
I'm going to have to say that I don't know enough about it to comment too much on the idea.

There have been a few comments around here that have said that, but I never agreed or disagreed.

I'm open to the idea that if you add up the health care costs needed over an entire lifespan for a person, that a person that lives longer would need more. Mostly probably because of perscription pills, I would guess.

However, I would bet that the person that has more health problems would cause their employers insurance costs to go up more. This may be why we are hearing about these companies that are offering incentives to employees that can show improvement in health, or proof of dropping bad habits like smoking.

When an employers insurance costs go up, it does effect all of the employees in that company, and perhaps even competitor companies that see that they are charging more, so they do it too.

I'll have to give those articles a closer look.

Speaking of health care--one of the big complaints I hear is that the overweight and obese are too big of a drain on the system. However, on the NY Times Well blog, people sometimes bring up a study or something that found that healthy people are actually a bigger drain on the system than the overweight/obese. This was because the overweight/obese pay into the system and then die before they use the money, whereas healthy people live longer and thus more is spent on them.

I can't remember the name of the study or anything, so I won't take it as fact just yet, but if it is true, the idea is interesting. Do you know what I'm talking about, McB?

I completely agree, Amanda!

As for your first point, I'd bet that that a lot of the people that Nugent is talking about would actually agree, BUT they would also say that what they do with their bodies is their business. And, their habits would remain the same.

And the point about it not being kids' fault they are fat... you're so right.

I think that parents allowing and even encouraging their kids to eat so poorly is a form of child abuse!!!

WOW! I never really thought about it before, but Nugent has a point -- if you're whining about wanting healthcare, then you absolutely need to CARE about your health!

Although I too wouldn't pick on the fat kid -- I'll bet 99% of the time, his parents are fat and feed him donuts every day for breakfast. I've seen too much of that. Childhood is about the only time when I'd say that being fat isn't your fault.

Oh, I know, McB. I've watched a few episodes of Bourdain's Food Network show, and he's okay. Most of it just made me roll my eyes. Teasing and bullying is just one of those things that just raises my hackles, so to speak.

Interesting some people don't have anything better to do then talk about other people. There in the great outdoors and see what they do on company time. I might be big but I'm not lazy. I walk eat very little sometimes it in your jeans. I'm always on a diet and take diet pills so everybody is not just trying to get health care.

Lucy, that line was pretty absurd, wasn't it?

Good point Brit. Kids aren't equipped to handle that kind of ridicule, and aren't mature enough to understand it.

Don't let these guys upset you. They're just blowing steam up each other's asses, and talking down from their high horses.
